Colin Allred vows to fight for abortion rights in Senate

Congressman Colin Allred, currently on his U.S. Senate campaign trail across Texas, has identified abortion rights as a pivotal issue influencing the election and driving voter turnout. His recent op-ed in the Dallas Morning News highlights his firm stance on this matter. Allred, a Dallas Democrat, emphasized the significance of abortion rights in the current political climate, asserting that if elected, he would vote to codify the protections of Roe v. Wade into law.

Allred’s argument revolves around the fundamental belief in freedom and personal autonomy, especially in Texas. “Go back to the standard that we’ve had for the last 50 years because what we’re going to have now is that lawyers, not doctors, are going to be determining whether or not a woman is sick enough for her to get the care that her doctor thinks she needs…It’s a big deal because I think we’re about freedom in our state. Fundamentally, I think Texans want to be left alone. They want to be able to pursue their version of the American dream. We’re not really in favor of government making personal decisions for you, and that’s what we’re seeing right here,” said Allred.

Beyond his political career, Allred has a diverse background. He is a former NFL player and a civil rights lawyer who served in the Obama administration. Working in the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Office of General Counsel, he collaborated with then-Secretary Julian Castro. His political journey saw a significant milestone in 2018 when he defeated Republican Pete Sessions, flipping a Dallas congressional district from red to blue. Allred secured his position with a reelection in 2020.

His Senate campaign is driven by a vision for Texas that challenges the status quo. “I’m running for U.S. Senate because Texans deserve a Senator whose team is Texas. Ted Cruz only cares about himself…We don’t have to be embarrassed by our senator. We can get a new one,” Allred declared, positioning himself as a candidate who prioritizes the interests and values of Texans. His campaign focuses on key issues like abortion rights, aiming to resonate with voters seeking change and representation aligned with their beliefs.
