Dallas Park and Recreation uses goats to control the spread of invasive privet at White Rock Lake

Dallas, Texas – Dallas Park and Recreation is taking an unusual but environmentally friendly approach to protect natural areas around one of the city’s most visited outdoor spaces. This week, nearly 300 goats are being deployed to help control the spread of invasive privet at White Rock Lake, focusing on the prairie area near the Bath House and Cultural Center.

Beginning Thursday, the goats will graze across approximately 11.5 acres over a 10-day period. To make sure the vegetation is cleared evenly and effectively, an electric fence will be moved every day to a new 1- to 1.5-acre section. City officials said this rotating setup allows the goats to target dense patches of privet while preventing overgrazing in one area.

A shepherd will remain onsite 24 hours a day throughout the project to monitor the animals, manage their movement, and ensure public safety. Dallas Park and Recreation officials said the constant supervision is a key part of keeping both the goats and park visitors safe during the operation.

Privet is considered a serious invasive plant that threatens native ecosystems. It spreads quickly, pushes out native vegetation, increases erosion, and can block visibility in public spaces. In dry conditions, it can also raise wildfire risks. By removing privet, the city aims to stabilize soil, protect wildlife habitat, and preserve the long-term health of the prairie landscape surrounding the lake.

Officials said the use of grazing goats offers a natural and eco-friendly solution. Unlike traditional equipment, goats produce no noise pollution, release no exhaust, and reduce the need for fuel-powered machinery. The animals can also reach steep or uneven terrain where mechanical tools may struggle.

The project is part of **Dallas Park and Recreation’s ongoing effort to protect White Rock Lake and other public parks across the city. City leaders say creative approaches like this help maintain green spaces while minimizing environmental impact and disruption to nearby neighborhoods.
