Dallas police arrest man after rooftop burglary attempt at West Illinois Avenue business
Dallas, Texas – Dallas police arrested a man after responding to a burglary in progress at a business in the 3800 block of West Illinois Avenue on February 24, 2026. Officers were dispatched following a report that someone had broken into the building, and their investigation quickly revealed an unusual entry method and a suspect already on the roof when they arrived.
According to preliminary findings, the suspect, 41-year-old Gabriel Ybarra, gained access to the business by cutting through the roof. Investigators said he removed approximately $12,000 worth of property before police reached the scene. When officers arrived, they spotted Ybarra positioned on top of the building.

As officers approached and prepared to secure the location, Ybarra fell through the roof into the building below. Police then made entry into the business, located him inside, and took him into custody without further incident.
Ybarra was transported to the Dallas County Jail, where he was charged with Burglary of a Building-Forced Entry, a State Jail Felony. Authorities documented the incident under case number 026695-2026.
During the investigation, officers also linked Ybarra to an earlier burglary at the same location. That incident occurred on January 31, 2026, and was documented under case number 018762-2026. Police said he faces an additional charge of Burglary of a Building-Forced Entry related to that offense.
The investigation remains part of ongoing efforts by Dallas police to address property crimes and hold repeat offenders accountable. Officials have not released further details about the recovered property or whether additional charges may be filed.
The unusual circumstances of the arrest — including the suspect’s fall through the roof — highlight the risks associated with burglary attempts and the rapid response by officers once the call was received. Authorities continue to encourage business owners to report suspicious activity promptly as investigations into related property crimes continue.
