Dallas responds to homeless needs during harsh weather conditions with two new shelters

Dallas, Texas – In response to the increasing needs of the homeless population during harsh weather conditions, Dallas has taken proactive steps by opening two additional inclement weather centers. This decision comes as the existing shelter at Fair Park’s Grand Place has reached its full capacity.

Officials from OurCalling and Austin Street Center have confirmed that the Grand Place at Fair Park, a primary shelter location for the homeless, is no longer able to accommodate more individuals due to the high influx of people seeking refuge from the inclement weather. To address this pressing need, the City of Dallas Office of Homeless Solutions has acted swiftly by opening two new shelters.

These newly opened facilities are located at Oak Lawn United Methodist Church and the former, now-closed facility of the Austin Street Center. The expansion of these shelters is a significant move to provide safe and warm places for those in need.

The Austin Street Center’s previous location has been repurposed to accommodate up to 360 people, offering a substantial increase in shelter capacity. Additionally, Oak Lawn United Methodist Church has opened its doors to provide shelter for up to 80 people. This expansion of facilities demonstrates the community’s commitment to supporting its vulnerable members during challenging weather conditions.

With these additional shelters, Dallas is better equipped to provide necessary assistance and protection to its homeless population, ensuring that more individuals have access to safe and secure accommodations during periods of extreme weather.
