Steamroller printing event showcases student creativity
Dallas, Texas – On November 11, an innovative steamroller printing event was held at Parish Episcopal School in Dallas, showcasing the artistic talents of students from several schools.
Students from Greenhill School and Ursuline Academy joined their peers at Parish Episcopal School for this unique event. The chosen theme centered around Texas flora and fauna, inspiring students to spend weeks meticulously carving designs on linoleum blocks. Junior students Ava Mao and Fern Hignite were at the forefront of this creative process, leading the carving efforts and experimenting with various animal motifs and intricate borders.
The steamroller printing technique is a distinctive approach to creating large-scale prints. The process begins by rolling ink over the carved linoleum. Careful attention is given to removing any rubber specks from the ink rollers. Once inked, the linoleum is then placed under a steamroller. To complete the process, parchment paper and two blankets are layered on top before the steamroller methodically passes over, transferring the inked design onto the paper.
However, the event faced challenges due to inclement weather, leading to its rescheduling. This change impacted both the attendance and the results of the prints.
Despite these hurdles, the steamroller printing event was a triumphant celebration of student collaboration and artistry. As a gesture of gratitude, one of the final prints will be gifted to the Parish Episcopal School for providing the necessary materials. Another print is set to become a part of a traveling art show, rotating between Greenhill, Parish, and Ursuline schools, thereby fostering a sense of community and shared achievement.
The crowning glory of the event will be the inclusion of the final print in Greenhill’s annual Gala, where it will contribute to fundraising efforts. Reflecting on the experience, Ava Mao expressed her satisfaction, highlighting the rewarding and fulfilling nature of the project. This event not only encouraged artistic creativity but also emphasized the importance of collaboration and community service among the students.
